What is riboflavin?

Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, is a water-soluble vitamin essential for human health.

Why do we need riboflavin?

Riboflavin contributes to many bodily functions, including:

Energy production

Riboflavin is involved in the transformation of carbohydrates, lipides and proteins into energy.

Red blood cell production

Riboflavin is involved in red blood cell production and transportation of oxygen to the cells.

Riboflavin deficiency

Riboflavin deficiency is very rare in developing countries. The signs and symptoms of deficiency include (2) :

  • Skin disorders
  • Edema of the mouth and throat
  • Lesions at the corners of the mouth
  • Swollen and cracked lips
  • Hair loss
  • Degeneration of the liver and nervous system

What are the risks of too much riboflavin?

According to the FNB (Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine), no adverse effects associated with riboflavin consumption from food or supplements have been reported. This does not mean that there is no potential for adverse effects resulting from high intakes. Since data are limited, caution may be warranted.
